Holding onto faith when you feel hopeless: Tips for overcoming faithlessness

Faith is often described as a firm belief in something unseen or unproven. The Bible states (Hebrews 11:1): “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Faith is an excellent source of guidance and strength in our lives, but when life gets tough, it’s easy to feel alone. Sometimes, you may feel like there is no hope, and maintaining your faith when you’ve reached rock bottom is challenging. However, it’s important to remember that these feelings are temporary, and you can still have faith even when it seems impossible. Here are some tips to help you keep your faith strong when you feel faithless:

When your faith starts to fade, the best first thing to do is admit and accept that you feel doubtful or lack faith, and feeling unsure of anything now and then is normal. What you do not want to do is ignore or deny these feelings because they will only become more overwhelming. Also, try to figure out why you are having doubts or feeling faithless. Are they triggered by external influences, life challenges, or internal struggles? Identifying and understanding the root of the problem is an effective way to deal with it.

It is easy to focus on the negatives of life when we are feeling faithless. Still, if we reflect on our spiritual journey and the times when our faith helped us through hard times, our faith can be rekindled. Practicing gratitude and focusing on the good things in our lives can remind us how blessed we are. As discussed in the previous blog, gratitude can help you feel more connected to your faith. Even in difficult times, there are positive aspects to be thankful for. Count your blessings and recognize the presence of faith in your journey.

Having people in your life who can help you through hard times is essential. It’s important to have people who can support you during difficult moments. Be bold and talk to people, whether family, friends, or religious leaders. Seek wisdom from your spiritual leaders or mentors. Express your thoughts and feelings with them. Sometimes, all it takes to get back on track with your faith is to talk to someone. The person or people you ask for help may have been through the same thing as you, and their story can inspire you.

Meditation and prayer can help you feel more grounded and connected to your faith. I know there are moments when we feel so disconnected that we’re at a loss for words, and that’s okay. Sometimes, the simple act of silence and focus can have a profound effect on your spiritual well-being. Seek guidance from the Holy Spirit. You can also journal your prayers and thoughts in prayer journals. Express yourself with your hands. Prayer and meditation are great ways to connect with God and ignite your faith.

Your faith can be strengthened by reading spiritual texts and learning from others’ experiences. Spend time in the Bible or other religious texts to help you feel more connected to your faith and give you a sense of purpose. In the Bible, there are several examples of people who lacked confidence in Jesus. Peter, for example, denied Jesus three times (John 18:25–27; Mark 14:71). However, after he repented and forgave him (John 21:15–17), he went on to become an impactful apostle, teaching the gospel and helping to save souls – the second book of Peter is a clear indication of his work for Christ. Like Peter, we may quickly lose faith when things are tough, but our faithlessness is not the end of it. Jesus is always willing to restore us for his honor and glory. We must, therefore, invest our time in getting closer to God through prayer and reading the word. Reading about others’ experiences and how they faced challenges in their faith and overcame them can be a source of motivation for us.

Sometimes, finding a different approach to connecting with our faith can be helpful. This could be trying a new form of meditation or prayer, attending a religious retreat or conference, or devoting your time to a worthy charity for a cause that shares your beliefs. Trying something new may strengthen your faith and give you a sense of direction.

Faith is a profound force that can carry us through life. Remember, it’s okay to feel faithless sometimes, but what is not okay is staying faithless forever. There are ways to get back on track spiritually, and by acknowledging and addressing them, we can come out of it more resilient.
